DJ Cavem, aka Ietef Vita, is not only a master on the mic and turntables – he also happens to be an educator with a doctorate, an organic farmer and not to mention a talented vegan chef. Ietef remains on a journey to bring healthy, local fresh foods to urban youth through culture and music. His latest BIOMiMICZ EP was released this week at Giants Garden at Oracle Park in the form of a code printed on USDA Organic seed packets for growing kale, arugula and beets.
This EP is truly an original listening experience, and for Recreator®, the manifestation of our company mantra – Sow the Seeds® – not only American hemp seeds, but also ideas and solutions built around sustainable materials, standing up for U.S. farmers and celebrating more earthly ways of living. As Cavem tells it, this is “the first USDA certified organic plant-based, zero-waste environmental hip hop album that you can actually plant … composed of lyrics discussing climate action, composting, recycling, soil and water conservation."
Previously the focus of a documentary we featured a few years ago entitled, From Gangs to Gardens, DJ Cavem’s message about creating a greener culture has only grown louder – as highlighted in an interview with VICE Munchies last month that called out other rappers to join the movement.
On the road hyping his new album Ritual Mystik, Oakland-based Baba Zumbi (founding member of alternative hip hop duo Zion I) represents the roots of (super)natural rhymes that call for a future where nature leads the way to health, wealth and happiness for all. Of late he's been influenced by practices in meditation, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi, all enhancing his hard-hitting lyrical edge and infectious energy from stage.
In between shows and travel, Cavem and Zumbi recently met up at the Apple Union Square (San Francisco) for a panel discussion on “Eco Beats” and to premiere the new video for “Sprout That Life,” shot rocking the REC hemp gear at Altius Greenhouse, Denver’s freshest rooftop tower garden.
