REC x The KTownWallz Project

His plan to revitalize the block starts with a better urban aesthetic and the influence to be had inside a spray can, so he and a few fellow painters established the KtownWallz Project. By welcoming select artists to paint the ever-changing walls of his Koreatown neighborhood, the project inherently limits more destructive forms of graffiti on local shops and buildings, often recognized as sloppy turf-war gang tags or more generic vandalism from youngsters. Neither of which serve much purpose as inspirational public art.

More than just murals, the project is focused on rebuilding the community by hauling out age-old trash from alleyways and streets, as well as building personal relationships with residents and hearing their concerns. It makes perfect sense: A better looking neighborhood encourages its people to take responsibility for keeping it clean and safe, especially after decades of neglect from city officials and social service agents.
